For Current & Ex Military
Making Soliders aware of the potentially destructive financial implications & health issues out of control gambling can cause
EPIC have been working with the armed forces to deliver education and awareness training since 2016. Gambling prevalence within the armed forces is high. In a study in 2017, Military Veterans were found to be eight times more likely to develop harmful gambling habits than the wider adult population.
01. Problem Gambling in the Armed Forces
A gambling problem in the armed forces has a high potential impact and EPIC staff who deliver the training have served within the forces, so they understand the issues. Working closely with the chain of command and medical staff, EPIC has been able to deliver sessions that provide service personnel with a range of tools to keep them away from the harmful effects of problem gambling.
02. Identifying the risks and putting in preventative measures
Military personnel (current and former) who suffer from PTSD and other Mental Health issues are considered ‘vulnerable’ and more at risk to developing a problem with gambling. EPIC provide informative workshops as well as a self-help handout which includes self-diagnostic questions and details of where to get help.
03. Ensuring fit for purpose pathways of support are available
EPIC is working with current and ex-military to tackle this issue through education in the first instance and ensure that fit for purpose pathways of support are available for this already suffering with gambling addiction. Currently, members of the armed forces receive annual awareness training on drugs and alcohol. EPIC are working with the chain of command to ensure problem gambling is treated in a similar way.
My sincere thanks for your recent and particularly powerful series of lectures on Gambling Awareness. Exposing your own journey in such a public and heartfelt manner has clearly resonated with those within this Garrison (military and civilian); it has also provided, for the first time, some objective analysis. The feedback I have received has been extremely positive and it has allowed me to consider our Gambling Awareness strategy for NI Garrison.Bridagier J Swift OBE
" A thank you for your excellent presentations at ' Withheld' in May 2017. The Commanding Officer has received great feedback, as have I. I have also had a few individuals come to see me for help with gambling issues - they have all mentioned that your presentation helped them come forward. Thank you once again."Welfare Officer For An Army Unit based in Wiltshire
